In yet another bold interpretation of the rules, WNBA referees issued a flagrant-2 foul against Indiana Fever rookie Caitlin Clark on Thursday night — not for her defense, not for trash talk, but for “aggressively bleeding on the ball after being elbowed in the face.”
The incident occurred in the second quarter, when Clark drove to the hoop, absorbed what doctors later described as “a full MMA elbow combo,” and collapsed to the floor clutching her nose. As her blood made brief contact with the game ball, the ref blew the whistle and issued the harshest penalty possible — citing “unsportsmanlike DNA transfer.”
“It was clear she was trying to gain sympathy from the officials, the fans, and possibly Congress,” said the lead referee, who reportedly mistook the blood for “a performance-enhancing fluid.”
The opposing team was awarded two free throws and possession, while Clark was escorted off the court for “excessive emotion and leaking.” Fever coach Christie Sides challenged the call, but after a 7-minute review and one referee muttering “ew, gross” under his breath, the decision was upheld.
“This league is gonna make her wear bubble wrap and apologize for bruising it,” said one visibly shaken fan, holding a “Let Her Bleed” sign as security tried to confiscate it for being “medically provocative.”
In post-game interviews, Clark smiled through a gauze-wrapped nose and said only: “I’ll try to bleed less, I guess.” The league has not yet commented on whether internal bleeding will count as a technical next week.
