Funko Pop! Surprised fans this morning by announcing they would be releasing a new line of Schindler’s List figurines.
Lead creative director, Michael Williams, made a post on his social media explaining the decision behind choosing Schindler’s List as the next film to be recreated in the unique style of Funko.
“It’s easy to make Funko Pop figurines based on Pixar characters or 80’s classics. We wanted to challenge ourselves and challenge our fans this time around. Some people are extremely uncomfortable with these characters. We know they’re hard to look at because they remind us of a dark event in history that took place not too long ago. We want our fans to look at these figurines and be shaken to their core with raw emotion and compassion. We’ve placed these figures online for preorder and we already know that purchasing them will be a sobering experience for everyone.”
Michael went on to explain which characters would be featured in this particular lineup. “Obviously we had to have Oskar Schindler. His legacy as a hero to the Jewish people is going to live on through this Funko Pop. We also have Girl In The Red Coat as part of the lineup. When fans put her up on their shelves they’ll be reminded everyday of the horrors that the Nazis inflicted upon the Jews during the second World War. Finally we have the feared Nazi officer, Amon Goeth. We debated whether or not we should include such a monster as part of the collection. Eventually we decided that evil is just as much part of the story as good. We want this figure to show the duality of mankind, when fans look at this figure we want collectors to be reminded of the evil that exists within us all.”
Sources from inside Funko Pop! have rumored that the next set of figurines afterwards will be for Grave Of The Fireflies.
