In a stunning admission of collective intellectual defeat, the network behind the popular game show Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? has announced the program will be rebranded as Are You Smarter Than a 4th Grader? starting this fall. The decision comes after years of watching grown adults panic over questions like, “What’s 3/5 of 25?”
“We’ve conducted extensive research,” said network executive Chad Fumbledore. “And by research, we mean watching dozens of contestants sweat through spelling words like ‘conscience.’ America simply isn’t emotionally prepared for 5th grade material. We’re meeting people where they are—slightly behind.”
The retooled show will now feature questions from subjects like “Basic Shapes,” “Counting Money (U.S. only),” and “What Sound Does a Dog Make?” Contestants will no longer be required to understand maps, decimals, or any state that isn’t Texas or Florida.
“We believe this move will create a more inclusive viewing experience,” said host Jeff Foxworthy, who now carries flashcards labeled NO BIG WORDS just in case. “At least three contestants thought the Civil War was fought over parking.”
Sources say the network is also piloting a spin-off titled Are You Smarter Than This Broken Toaster?, which has tested surprisingly well in focus groups, especially among viewers who identify as “podcast-smart.”
At press time, the Department of Education issued a statement of support, noting the show “might actually be too hard even at 4th grade, but we’ll cross that bridge when someone can read the word ‘bridge.’”
